To use Unicode and IPA on Windows, follows these steps:
- Install a recent copy of CLAN.
- Install a Unicode font. If you have Microsoft
Office installed, you should already have Arial Unicode installed.
- If you need to work with older non-UTF CHAT files, you can
convert them to UTF format using CLAN's CP2UTF program.
- To use IPA characters, you should download and install the
Charis SIL font.
- To enter IPA into Unicode CHAT files, you should install the Tavultesoft Keyman
program and the IPA Unicode keyboard
from SIL.
- Here are a few comments about Keyman and its installation: After installing Keyman
and setting up Icelandic for Office and Windows, remember to restart.
After restarting, you can open a new CLAN file. Then set your language to Icelandic
and make sure that you have the curly "n" (engma) displayed on the KeyMan icon in your System Tray.
Make sure you make these settings after opening your CLAN file. To test the installation, just
type a few letters followed by the equals sign, such as f= and s= You should see that, after typing
the equals sign (=) the previous character converts to IPA.
To learn the full keyboard system, you need to rely on the IPA table in the release notes.
To read this table, note that each symbol has the keystrokes to its left. For example,
t{ produces the dental t, n< produces engma and so forth.
